A lot of people already ask AI assistants about money. How much should I keep in an emergency fund? Is this SIP too aggressive? Where is my salary going every month?
The answers are usually reasonable and almost always generic, because the assistant has no idea what your money looks like. It does not know your balances, your card dues, what you spent on food last month or which of your mutual funds overlap. So you end up pasting screenshots into a chat window, retyping numbers from three apps, or settling for advice that would fit anyone.
Fold already has the context. It sees your bank accounts, cards, mutual funds, stocks, EPF, NPS, PPF, FDs, loans and credit score in one place, cleaned up and categorised. Fold MCP is how we hand that context to the AI tools you already use, on your terms.
What MCP is, briefly
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard, now supported by most major AI apps, that lets an assistant connect to a service and use it as a tool. Instead of you copying data into the chat, the assistant asks the service directly, gets exactly the data it needs for your question, and answers from that.
Fold MCP is a Fold server that speaks this protocol. Once you connect it, an assistant like ChatGPT or Claude can look up your Fold data when a question needs it.
Ask about your actual money
With Fold connected, you can ask things like:
- "How has my net worth changed over the past year, and which assets contributed most?"
- "Compare my dining and travel spending over the last six months and flag unusual spikes."
- "Which recurring payments are due in the next 30 days, and how much should I keep aside?"
- "Summarise my stock and mutual fund allocation and highlight any concentration."
- "Which of my credit cards has the highest outstanding, and when is it due?"
The assistant pulls the relevant numbers from Fold, does the arithmetic, and explains it in plain language. You can keep going from there: drill into a month, ask why a category jumped, or have it build a table you can paste somewhere else.
Ask it to tidy things up
Reading is half of it. Fold MCP can also write back to Fold, but only when you ask it to.
That turns out to be useful for the chores nobody enjoys. You can ask your assistant to tag last week's untagged transactions, fix a wrong category, clean up messy merchant names, add a note to a payment so you remember what it was for, or log a cash transaction you made at the market. It does the work in Fold, and you see the result in the app.
Nothing changes unless you ask for it in the conversation.
You stay in control
Connecting a finance app to an AI tool is a decision worth thinking about, so here is exactly how it works:
You choose the app. Fold data is shared only with the AI apps you connect yourself. Nothing is shared by default.
You sign in with your Fold phone number and an OTP. There is no password to hand over and no API key to manage.
You can revoke access at any time, from Fold or from the AI app.
The AI app has its own policies. Once you connect an AI app, the data it fetches is handled under that app's terms, so it is worth checking how the app you use treats your conversations.
It is not financial advice. AI assistants can make mistakes, including with numbers. Treat their answers as a starting point for your own thinking, not as a recommendation to buy, sell or borrow.
Fold MCP is still in beta. We are adding tools and fixing rough edges based on what people ask it, and we would love to hear what works and what does not.
How to set it up
It takes about two minutes:
- In Fold, go to Profile → Settings → Beta Playground and turn on MCP access.
- In ChatGPT, Claude or another supported app, add Fold as a connector. Step-by-step instructions for each app are on fold.money/mcp.
- Sign in with your Fold phone number and the OTP.
That is it. Start a new chat and ask a question about your money.
Fold MCP works with Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor today, and with other apps that support remote MCP servers. It is included with Fold Plus on the yearly plan and with Believer.
If you build something interesting with it, a weekly review, a spending dashboard, a budget planner, we would love to see it. Share it with us on Discord or at [email protected].
